A Seed Today, A Harvest Tomorrow

A Seed Today, A Harvest Tomorrow

Today, I was reading Ezekiel 17, and one verse stood out to me:

“Then he took some of the seed of the land and planted it in fertile soil. He placed it beside abundant waters…” (Ezekiel 17:5)

As I sat with this passage, I began asking myself a question:

What are the seeds God has planted in my life?

And even more importantly:

What kind of soil am I providing for those seeds to grow?

We often ask God for more.

More direction.

More opportunities.

More blessings.

More clarity.

But sometimes God is asking us a different question:

What are you doing with the seed I’ve already given you?

A seed carries potential. It contains life. It contains a future harvest. But a seed alone is not enough. It must be planted in good soil and cared for faithfully.

The soil represents our hearts.

A humble heart.

A teachable heart.

A surrendered heart.

A heart willing to obey God even when the outcome isn’t fully visible.

The truth is that God can plant a good seed, but if we neglect the soil, we may never experience the fruit He intended.

As I continued reflecting on this, I realized that seeds come in many forms.

Sometimes God plants a dream.

Sometimes He plants a calling.

Sometimes He plants a business idea.

Sometimes He plants a ministry.

Sometimes He gives us a vision that seems small at first but carries eternal significance.

The question is not whether the seed is good.

The question is whether we will steward it.

If God gives you a business idea, stewardship may look like learning, planning, showing up consistently, improving your craft, and taking the next step of obedience.

If God gives you a ministry assignment, stewardship may look like serving faithfully when nobody notices.

Too often we become focused on fruit while God is focused on roots.

A seed doesn’t produce fruit first.

It produces roots.

Roots grow in hidden places.

Roots develop underground where nobody sees them.

And yet the strength of future fruit depends entirely on the health of those roots.

Sometimes what feels like delay is actually God establishing a deeper foundation.

But there was another thought that came to me while reading.

Words are seeds too.

Every day we are planting something with our words.

We plant seeds into our marriages.

We plant seeds into our children.

We plant seeds into our friendships.

We even plant seeds into our own hearts.

Scripture says:

“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Proverbs 18:21)

Notice that word: fruit.

Words produce harvests.

What we consistently speak eventually grows.

When we speak life, encouragement, truth, and blessing, we are planting seeds that can bear good fruit for years to come.

When we speak fear, criticism, bitterness, and negativity, those seeds can also grow.

This has caused me to become more intentional with my words.

Before speaking, perhaps we should ask ourselves:

If this word were a seed, would I want to eat its fruit later?

What am I planting in my children’s lives?

What am I planting in my marriage?

What am I planting in my own heart?

Every conversation is a planting season.

Every decision is a seed.

Every act of obedience is a seed.

Every word is a seed.

And every seed eventually produces a harvest.

Maybe before asking God for another seed, we should pause and ask:

Lord, how am I caring for the seeds You’ve already planted?

Am I watering them?

Am I protecting them?

Am I stewarding them faithfully?

Because fruitfulness is not usually the result of one dramatic moment.

It is often the result of faithfully tending the seeds God entrusted to us long ago.

Today, let’s examine our soil, steward our seeds, and trust God with the harvest.

The seed is His.

The growth is His.

The harvest is His.

Our responsibility is simply to remain faithful.

Prayer

Lord, I thank You for the seeds You have given us.

Thank You for every promise, every calling, every dream, every opportunity, and every word You have planted in our lives. Give us wisdom to properly steward what You have entrusted to us.

Lord, we repent for the careless words we have spoken over our marriages, our families, our children, our businesses, and even over ourselves. Forgive us for the seeds we have planted through fear, doubt, frustration, or unbelief.

From this day forward, help us to think before we speak. Remind us that our words carry power and that every word we sow has the potential to produce a harvest. Teach us to speak life, faith, truth, encouragement, and blessing.

Thank You for Your living Word. Thank You that through Scripture You teach us, correct us, guide us, and reveal Your heart. Help us become wise stewards of all that You have already given us.

Forgive us for the times we have asked for more while neglecting the seeds You have already placed in our hands. Today, we ask for the strength and discipline to go back and faithfully steward those seeds. Help us water them, protect them, nurture them, and trust You with the growth.

Thank You for Your grace, Your patience, and Your mercy. Thank You for the opportunity to walk with You and learn Your ways. Holy Spirit, guide us daily. Help us cultivate good soil, plant good seeds, and produce fruit that brings glory to You.

We surrender every seed and every harvest into Your hands.

In the mighty name of Jesus,

Amen.
